RACE REPORT
A superb day in Raheny for the annual 5 mile event. Record numbers of 3201 signed up for this event making it the most successful yet in it's 31 year history. Well done to all who took part and the huge efforts made by Pat Hooper and his team from Raheny Shamrock AC. This was an incredible turn out by clubs and runners from all over the country.
Runners came from the four corners of the country which can be seen spread through the results. A very mild January day added to the great atmosphere, that was enjoyed at the start and finish line area. Prior to the Big Race, the children's races provided some very exciting action and added to whole party like atmosphere, with thousands of onlookers cheering tomorrows young talent on...
The main event itself was filled with top class runners in both the Men's and Ladies categories. The most inspiring aspect to the event was the spread of runners from top class Athletes to new beginners, and those who just love to get out and run without the competitive edge. Everybody was most welcomed by the Raheny Shamrock AC Club.
Some large attendances from the Dublin clubs such as Crusaders AC, Brothers Pearse AC, Balbriggan & District, Clonliffe Harriers, Donore Harriers, Tallaght AC , Sportsworld, Raheny Shamrock AC and the list goes on. Out side of Dublin was extremely well represented by Droghheda & District, Dunboyne AC, Start of the Sea, Sligo AC and all the way from East Antrim they came to take part.
This was part of the Lord Mayor's 5 Alive Challenge Series, which is proving to be a huge success in getting people active and socially involved in running. The next event of the Lord Mayor's Challenge Series will be the MSB St. Patrick's Festival 5k on March 20th. Other groups similar to this in high attendance were the Runners Support Page, and Sloggers to Joggers. The social aspect around these events is very evident, creating great hype and anticipation to events around the city. Long may this trend continue and feed through to the next generation of runners.
This year's event was won by local Man Mick Clohissey of Raheny Shamrock AC, which was fitting to the day. The Ladies event was also filled with class and taking the top spot was Mary Cullen of North Sligo AC. You can check out all results below.
