EVENT REPORT
This year's Battle of Clontarf certainly lived up to its name. We knew it was going to be very competitive from early in the week with a high volume of Leinster Club athletes signing up for the 10 Mile race in St. Anne's Park. Athletes came from every part of leinster with a particularly high attendance by Offaly clubs. They were coming to take medals from local Dublin clubs with a strong focus on going home with a large number of awards. The Gauntlet was set for the Dublin clubs and other Leinster counties to take on the challenge to battle it out for glory.
Raheny Shamrock A.C. is the host club and St. Annes Park is its playground. This is a proud part of the world in running circles with a strong tradition spanning over many years. Their Athletes were also looking to benefit from running on home soil and willing to fight for every position and medal possible. This only led to a mouth watering and exciting race ahead.
We also had record numbers signing up with just under 700 athletes beating the 2029 record of just over 500 runners. Although we had a very competitive field of runners, we did also have many runners taking part for the experience and feel good factor that is always associated with this race as with all of Raheny Shamrock A.C. events. It was very much about having a great day out in St. Anne's Park with some great friends and like minded people.
Peter Somba of Dunboyne A.C lead the race out with Daniel Stone of Raheny Shamrock A.C.. Both Athletes were nip and tuck until Daniel unfortunately had to pull out leaving the Championship open for Peter to finish comfortably in the end clocking a time of 51:59. Mick Fogarty of Ferbane A.C. was 2nd and Karl Nolan of Clonliffe Harriers in 3rd place. The Men's Senior team winners were Dunboyne A.C. with host club Raheny 2nd and Tullamore Harriers 3rd. The county senior Champions were Dublin followed by Offaly and Louth sharing the spoils with Dublin and Offaly.
The women's race was won by Caroline Donnellan of Edenderry A.C. in a time of 61:04. Sarah Baryga of Sli Cualann was 2nd and in 3rd was another Edenderry athlete Aisling O'Connor. The women's team champions were Tullamore Harriers with Raheny Shamrock A.C. in 2nd and in 3rd place was Crusaders A.C.
The county team winners Offaly with Dublin in 2nd place. Westmeath also joined the medal party in 3rd place.
Well done to all the athletes who travelled to St. Anne's Park today. Alos a big thanks must go to Raheny Shamrock A.C., St. Anne's Park and Athletics Leinster for making this event happen.
