RACE REPORT
Juan Ignacio Pena from Raheny Shamrock A.C. won today's race in a time of 14:34 after fighting off some tough competition from Colm Rooney of Clonliffe Harriers in a time of 14:39. These 2 clubs with great tradition always seem to come head to head in the big Dublin races. What a battle we had all the way to the finish. Within the mix were 2 other Raheny Shamrock athletes pushing the top 2 right to the end. Shane Spring who has been on an upward curve for many months now finished 3rd in a time of 14:41. New to the Raheny stable was Anthony O'Brien clocking 14:49. Coach Feidhlim Kelly of Dublin Track club had a good day. The Rahney duo of Juan and Anthony are under his wing with some very notable performances of late. Juan had won the Griffith Mile just 7 days previous in a time of 4:04 and he also won the Dromiskin 5k 2 weeks previous.
The women's race was equally close and went right to the wire. Cherly Nolan of St. Abban's A.C. and Ide Ni Domhnaill of West Limerick A.C. gave one of the closest battles in a long time. Ide took out the race but with just meters to go on the home straight Cheryl took victory and clocked a time of 16:02 What a race between 2 great athletes. Again like Juan in the mens race Cheryl was in good form winning the Griffith Mile last week. In 3rd place was another very talented athlete, Claire Fagan of Mullingar Harriers who finished in a time of 16:23. Just take a look at the women's results to see some great athletes' names in the top 10. You will see 6 women broke sub 17 mins and 17 ran sub 18.
This was also the Dublin Championships. Raheny were the big winners taking both the mens and womens overall team and Dublin Senior teams. Raheny, Clonliffe and Rathfranham were the top 3 male teams. In the men's 35 + Brothers Peasre were the winners and in the men's 50 + teams Crusaders were the winners.
The Top 3 womens teams weer Raheny, Crusaders and DSD AC were the overall event team winners and also Dublins top 3. Brothers Pearse were the Dublin 35+ team winners and Civil Service Harriers were the womens 50+ team winners.
