UCD Sunrise 5k
RACE REPORT

An Early start this morning in UCD's Belfield campus for the Sunrise 5k. Runners who took part were mostly from overseas. They were visiting Ireland for the 18th World Congress of Food Science Technology. This congress travels the world, and each congress hosts a 5k. This years 5k in UCD was an extremely fun event. Nothing was left to chance as the level of professionalism and attention to detail by organisers was to be admired . The level of organisation provided for an entertaining fun run 5k. MyRunResults Lucy Darcy warmed up the participants to some high intensity music giving the runners the "feel good factor".
The route consisted of 2 laps around the campus. Each runner was welcomed across the finish line to high applause with some very good commentary and music. Each Runner was finally led to avail of a free breakfast. Its not often a full Irish is handed out after an event. Medals and T shirts were also part of the participants entry fee.
The theme for this race is was Baton of Hope with the baton symbolising ‘education’ and the ‘sharing of knowledge’. The aim of this was to have fun, get in some morning exercise and to support two worthy educational causes.
Funds raised will be used for two causes, one local and one international
1. Local cause: A bursary will be provided for an Irish based early stage researcher to attend the 19th IUFoST World Congress in 2018 in India.
2. International cause: Remaining funds will be used to support an ambitious research programme in Southern Ethiopia aimed at transforming the livelihoods of millions who ‘exist’ under the constant threat of recurring climatic extremes.
