Clonakilty Waterfront Half Marathon and 10k was yet another great event. This year the Marathon route was flooded on Thursday and the tough decision to cancel the Marathon was made. However, most participants were just happy to be part of this great event and ran the half Marathon. This is always a massive hit with runners just before Christmas.
Over 2,100 signed up for this year's event. We also had a new HQ home in Clonakilty showgrounds, where the start and finish also were located. The weather was not the kindest but this did not deter runners having fun and getting into the Clonakilty swing of love, joy and big race atmosphere. The new location was superb and very participant friendly. As participants came back from their half marathon route and 10k they were greeted with a wall of noise and congradulations in the showgrounds. They also completed a lap of the show grounds before finishing.
Each runner was made feel very special as they crossed the line. After a wet and cold run each runner was treated with a cuppa and some of the famous clonakilty pudding and more.
The winner of the 10k was Garet Lordan of local club Clonakilty Road Runners and women's winner was Catherine Murphy of Eagle A.C.
The Half Marathon winner was Tudor Moldovan of Clonliffe Harriers and the women's winner was Carmel Ward of Raheny Shamrock A.C.
Each finisher was presented with a fabulous medal celebrating local hero Michael Collins and the 100th anniversary of the state. It also had a message of support for Ukraine and Ukrainans living in Ireland. Clonakilty is very much about delivering a message of Love and Peace and welcoming. This is one of the main reasons why runners come back every year.
We look forward to 2023 already
