RACE REPORT

The Drogheda & District Christmas 5k was another great success today and set of the festive season perfectly. This was a brilliant day for the elite, competitive, fun runners and walkers alike The weather played ball for the participants with the rain holding off long enough for everyone to stay dry while running and enjoy the treats and refreshments afterwards. The event brought a great sense of community to the race and fun to the day with a great festival atmosphere where there was face painting, and singing and general Christmas merriness (that may have been helped along by the mulled cider on offer!). The Club thoughtfully recognised the tragic loss of young Alanna Russell - who was very much part of the local running scene with her Dad Keith this year by having a minutes applause to celebrate her life at the beginning of race.

The event was well supported by many clubs from around the county - Raheny, Clonliffe, Dunleer, Balbriggan, Navan, Sli Chulainn but to name a few. The race also a great compare in Irish Runner editor Frank Greally who kept the crowds informed and entertained.

MyRunResults Male Course Record Winner David Flynn

The competitive front runners had a fantastic day out with the Male Course Record sponsored by MyRunResults beaten by David Flynn of Clonlife Harriers in a time of 14:57. David brought home a serious bunch of athletes with Valdas Dopolskas of Babriggan AC and Lithuanian Oplympian coming second and Tomas Cotter of Dunleer AC in third. The Female Winner was Catherina McKiernan of Annalee AC who completed course in 17:33, followed shortly by Drogheda AC athletes Mary Leech and Erin McHugh.

This event is only in it's second year and it's popularity seems to be just growing as it sold with a week to go. The Club host a variety of events throughout the year culminating in this festive event where it seemed everyone came out to enjoy, with with elves, Santa's and even a turkey to be seen.
