EVENT REPORT

The Dublin Masters XC hosted by Raheny Shamrock A.C. was a hugely and much eagerly awaited event of the New Year. It definitely did not disappoint. There is something about the Dublin Masters that has something very unique attached to it.

It could be the Pat Hooper effect. Pat who is no longer with us was an incredible influence on Dublin Athletics, Raheny Shamrock A.C. and everybody he came to know in his lifetime.

The event has a friendly, welcoming but at the same time that competitive edge that comes with XC. Pat was the instigator of bringing the Dublin Masters to local St. Annes Park, the home of Raheny Shamrock A.C. club members. Host club members were looking to make a mark on this year's event. The introduction of the Pat Hooper perpetual team cup made the event even more special and meaningful for Raheny Shamrock A.C.

The new team cup also brought extra competition from other Dublin clubs looking to honor the great man himself. Pat would not want it any other way but to have good battle and competition among friendly rivals.

A staggering 586 athletes signed up for this year's event. The standard was extremely high across all age categories. The start list just oozed with excitement and anticipation of how results would turn out. Individual age cats and age team categories were incredibly competitive.

The overall winner of the women's Masters was Barbara Clearly who stromed home with comfortable win. She dominated the race from start to finish. The women's over 35 team winners were Sportsworld RC. The women's over 50 team winners were Raheny Shamrock A.C. The over 65 team winners were also the host club Raheny Shamrock A.C.

In the men's race over 285 took to the start line and shot off at a frantic pace. It wasn't long before it started to filter out with leaders starting to show. Home favourite Mick Clohisey took the race on right from the start. There was no stopping Mick as he romped home in style. This was Mick's first year entering into the Masters category. It was also very fitting that he won his home race hosted by Raheny Shamrock A.C. The men's over 35 team winners were Rahney Shamrock, the men's over 50 team winners were Donore Harriers. The men's over 65 team winners were Raheny Shamrock A.C.

The Pat Hooper Cup was fittingly won by Raheny Shamrock A.C. with 49 points followed by Clonliffe Harriers just behind in 2nd with 43 points.
