Super Valu Dunboyne 10k

RACE REPORT
Today's Dunboyne 10k experienced some of the highest temperatures so far this year touching a whopping 17 degrees. This was more like summer rather than March. Hopefully, this a sign of the bright future ahead for road racing in 2022. Today was also Mother's Day and another reason for celebration, which aided a great day in Dunboyne. The host club Dunboyne AC yet again gave runners a top class experience. The level of organisation was military like providing runners with a flat fast course and high energy commentary from Feidhlim Kelly. This was matched with a fantastic atmosphere as runners ran through the village centre just after the start line and returned again to the village centre for the finish.
For spectators, friends and family they were able to cheer on the runners as they flew throiugh the village juts a couple of hundred metres into the race. They crowd then greeted the runners with a wall of noise as they finished in the village green. Both sides of the home straright was filled with supporters as the sun beat down.
Out on the course and race itslef things were hotting up too with some great racing on a flat course. We had some fierce competition and PBs galore. The mens race was a clash of the current road race Titans. Jake O'Regan of St. John's AC (Clare) who is on an amazing hot streak was lined with Eftem Gidey of Clonliffe Harriers fresh off his impressive Lusk 4 Mile. As it turned out Efrem attacked right from the gun and took control straight away. We was not leaving anything to chance and risk a dog fight. He rocketed his way home to finish well ahead of Jake. He also clocked an amazing time ot 28:25 setting a very high standard for years to come. In 3rd place was John Paul Williamson.
The mens top 3 teams were Portmarnock AC, Donore Harriers and Brothers Pearse AC.
The women's race was also heavily stacked with top road race athletes. The results certainly back up the depth of the womens field. However, one world class athlete Fionnuala McCormack rocked up and just tore the womens field apart. Fionnuala is one of the best athletes the country has ever produced and keeps performing year after year making her one of the most consistent athletes too.
In 2nd place was the highly talented Ciara Hickey of Brothers Pearse AC. Certainly not a stranger to road racing and well known within the world of athletics. In 3rd was one of the years most consistent womens runner Sile O'Byrne of Sli Caulainn. (Parnell AC)
The battle for teams was also fiercely contested. By looking at the team results any 1 of the top 3 would generally win. Mullingar Harriers, Crusaders AC and Dunboyne AC were the top 3.
The race was also part of the Meath Athletics 10k Road Race Championships. This provided some extra spice for Meath athletes and an added incentive to perform both individually and for their club. The host Club Dunboyne AC took the men's and women's top team placings. Rory Kavanagh of Dunboyne AC was the very popular winner of the Meath Championship. The very talented and upcoming star Ava Costello won the women's title in the Meath Championship.
Well done to all who took part and to host club Dunboyne AC.
