John Treacy Dungarvan 10

RACE REPORT

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10' yet again sold to capacity in record time. Even with extra capacity put in place for 2020, the event sold over 3,200 entries. This is now one of Munster's and Ireland's premier 10 mile races. West Waterford A.C. are the host club who have built up the event with years of experience and vast knowledge of hosting road race events. Runners from all over the country came to Dungarvan to experience this years big race feel. The starting line was a wash of athletic club singlets showing the high regard that the John Treacy 10' has among clubs around the country.

The race over the years has always attracted some of Ireland's most talented athletes and this year was no exception. In the mens race we had Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock A.C.), Kevin Maunsell, Alan O'Shea (Bantry A.C.) and many more top athletes.

The women's race had race race favorite Aoife Cooke (Eagle A.C.) (Sarah McMahon DSD A.C.) Fiona Santry (East Cork A.C.) Siobhain O'Doherty (Borrisokane A.C.) and Angela McCann all looking to take the 2020 title.

The race started on Youghal Rd at 1.30pm with a wall of excitement and noise. Right from the gun the race was tight with previous winners Mick Clohisey and Kevin Maunsell taking each other on. It was nip and tuck for every mile of the race. The 2 European XC ahtletes battled it right to the end. Former Olympian Mick pulled away on the home stretch. Both athletes give it all they had, giving supporters a great spectacle. The suspense at the finish line was second to none wondering who would finally win.

In the process both runners broke the current course record. Mick ran 48:16 and Kevin 48:30. The record they beat was 48:44.

The women's race also brought another course with Aoife Cooke smashing the record in a time

Runners were also battling it out for age categories and team scoring. There were 2 team awards, The John Treacy Cup and the the Open team with 3 to score for both men and women. For the open team scoring any athlete that came in the top 10 for male and top 6 for female were taken out of the open team results. This also applied to any athlete that finished in the top 3 of their age category.

The open team was based on placings and the John Treacy team results were based on gross times
