Race Report
Another sell out race for 2022 was today's John Treacy Dungarvan 10' hosted by West Waterford AC. Over 3,200 entered in record time for this hugely popular event. It was sold out well before Christmas last year. Club participation was extremely high leading to a very high standard race. Clubs from all over Munster and Ireland made their way to Dungarvan. Just a look at the results gives an indication of the club participation. Many clubs brought an army of members. This was not just a race but a huge social event for clubs.
Weather conditions were not ideal with blustery winds and some light rain on and off throughout the morning. This did not deter the die hard runners looking to perform at their best. Athletes knew only too well how lucky they were to be taking part in road race events again after so long out of action. The crowds that we witnessed had not been seen for a long time in Dungarvan. The Previous week Raheny 5 was the trend setter for seeing huge crowds again. Dungarvan and it's runners now got that great feeling back. The atmosphere was out of this world. Before the race runners ran up and down the local roads to warm up, they stretched out and jumped up and down all just to keep the nerves and excitement at bay. This was a big event and you could feel the intensity and excitement.
The race started at exactly 11:00 am and the JT Dungarvan 10' was off for 2022. The race was stacked with many talented athletes. In the men's race Hugh Arsmstrong, Conor Duffy, David McCarthy, Tim O'Donoghue, David Mansfield and many more was all racing to make their mark. This was a really high class field. They all bunched well and helped each other along the miles. This was real racing at it's best. However, in the end pre race favourite Hugh Armstrong of Ballina A.C. took control and won in a time of 48:51. 2nd was Conor Duffy of Glaslough Harriers and in 3rd was Tim O'Donoghgue of East Cork AC.
Olympian Aoife Cooke was the womens favourite. Looking to take on Aoife was Ruth Fitzgerald of Waterford A.C. and the very much in form Siobhain O'Doherty of Borrisokane A.C. Aoife took the race by the scruff of the neck and beat her own course record by 4 seconds. She won in a time of 54:19. Ruth finished 2nd and Siobhain in 3rd.
No matter where you were positioned in the race you were fighting for age category or team placings such was the level of competition. This all lead to runners pushing just that bit more and further enhancing their own performances.
In terms of teams, these were based on AAI clubs with 2 team awards for both men and women. The open race results were based on all club members who were not individual prize winners. Teams were based on combined placings of the top 3 athletes.
The 2nd team award was the John Treacy Cup. This was based on all club athletes regardless if they won individual prizes. It was also based on combined time for the top 3 athletes in both men's and womens races.
Provisional men's team winners for the open race was Leevale A.C. with host club West waterford A.C. 2nd and 3rd was Waterford A.C. The women's open race team winners was Watergrasshil A.C. with Clonmel 2nd and West Waterford A.C. in 3rd.
The John Treacy men's team winners was West Waterford A.C. with 2nd East Cork A.C. and Leevale A.C. in 3rd place.
The John Treacy women's team winners was Clonmel A.C. with Eagle A.C. and Watergrasshill in 3rd.
Well done to West Waterford AC, Local authorities and volunteers for all their hard work over the last number of months of for making this event happen
