John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile

RACE REPORT

The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 hosted by West Waterford AC was a sell out in record time before Christmas. Runners were eager and could not wait for this event to come around. Over 2,800 runners signed up for the challenge in the south east town. The event certainly did not disappoint the thousands of runners and spectators. The conditions were ideal for running today. The weather was brisk but clear and dry. Runners descended upon Dungarvan from early morning. Runners from all parts of the country attended, Waterford, Wexford, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry, Kilkenny, Kildare,Laois, Meath, Dublin, Sligo, Galway and even as far as New York. The event catered for all levels of runners from top Athletes to Fun runners.

The race itself had some quality Athletes for both the Men's and Women's race. The number or Club runners on show indicated the class on show. The Men's race was close with 4 runners keeping close for the first few miles. Last year's winner Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC was tucked in nicely with Kevin Maunsell, David Flynn and Emmett Dunleavy. Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel AC pulled away in the end to have a comfortable win. Kevin has been in excellent form over the last number of months following a superb run the Euorpean XC Championships for Ireland only a couple of months ago.

The Women's race was won by Laura O'Shaughessy. Siobhan O'Doherty of Borrisokane AC was in 2nd place. Laura had 1 min 12 secs to spare over Siobhan. Ruth Fitzgerald of Waterford AC finished 3rd to complete the top 3 in the women's results.

The were 2 club team prizes, the main event team results and the John Treacy Challenge cup. The overall team results excluded category placed winners to score based on points/placings. The John Treacy Challenge Cup allowed all runners score regardless if they already picked up and age category prize. These results were based on accumulated times.
