RACE REPORT
The Leinster even age and novice cross country took place in Gowran Co. Kilkenny and was hosted by Gowran A.C. The club have now hosted many XC events and it shows with the high level of organisation and presentaion of the course.
Large numbers attended both the juvenile and Novice races. The weather conditions made it ideal for running with bright sunshine for most of the day. This certainly enhanced the athletes experience and very enjoyable for spectators. The day started off with U10 races that are non competitive.
The U12 girls started at 11.30 with 140 runners takigng to the line and from there on we had some great racing. Mullingar Harriers, St. Abbans and Kilkenny City Harriers were the big winners over many of the under age races.
The U18 and U20 races were combined events. Emma Hickey of United Striders was the first U18 girls runner home and Eimear Cooney of Ace Atheltics Club was first U20. All U18 athletes can score in the U20 teams, however they cannot win 2 medals for individual awards. The U2O gold silver and bronze is awarded the U20 athlete only.
The U18 boys race was won by Uinteed Striders Max Murphy, Ace Athletics Club who are looking very strong at U20 had another winner Shea O'Donell for the U20 race. Check out all the team scoring for club and county in Results.
The Novice races were the last 2 events on the time table. Dublin DCH who have dominated womens XC over the few years came up trumps again. They seem to keep turning over fresh new talent to win Novice, Inter and carry forward to Senior. Fiona Hawkins of DCH was the over all winner with Edel McCreery of Rathfarnham WSAF in 2nd. Caroline Harney Ayton of Parnell A.C was 3rd. This was a qaulity field of runners in this years Novice race. The club winners DCH were followed by Sportsworld RC and Parnell A.C in 3rd. Dublin, Kildare and Kilkenny were the top 3 Countys.
The Mens Novice race was the last race of the day with 107 athletes taking to the line. St. Brigids of Meath, Ben Brunton had an all out battle to the line with Jack McMahon of Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC. Both athletes gave everthing they had. Ben hung on to take the title.
