RACE REPORT

The first running of the Lough Boora Half Marathon was a huge success today in the stunning Co. Offaly bog land setting. The scenic venue was magnificent to host such a great event. This was originally a very popular 10k & 5k event in previous year's. Current running trends have shown a considerable increase in half marathon participation and the Lough Boora Half Marathon reflected this. Over 750 runners took part in both events combined. The event attracted runners from all parts of the country along with very strong local support. The 5k has very much focused on participation and fun, with the Half Marathon pointed more to the competitive edge.

Founders Lough Boora running club set this event up to cater for all abilities and welcoming every type of runner from novice to the well seasoned athlete. The club have certainly got people up and running in the local area.

The main Half Marathon event was won by local athlete David Murray who runs with Tullamore Harriers. This was an excellent run on David's home turf. The ladies winner Pauline Curley who is also a Tullamore Harriers Athlete and no stranger in running circles.

The 5k race was won won Brendan Donnagher and the female winner was Nadine Donnegan of Tullamore Harriers.

The 5k event was not chip timed as this was focused more on participation and non competitive.

Well done to all the crew including the admin staff, Civil Defence, Gardai, Catering crew and special thanks Tom Egan of Lough Boora Discovery Park.
