SONIA O'SULLIVAN COBH 10

EVENT REPORT

The Sonia O'Sullivan Cobh 10 produced yet another fantastic day. The sun always seems to shine on Cobh for this race. Cobh as a venue for a race is out of this world with stunning views of the harbour and coast.

Many participants travelled far and wide to attend today's race. For a weekend break and running holiday this is hard to beat. Ballymore Cobh A.C. are the host club who helped Sonia O'Sullivan put the race on.  Runners get to experience Cobhs scenic town and get to meet one of Ireland's most successful and much adored sports personalities of all time.

We also had participants travel from the UK and the US to get the experience of the Cobh 10. Irish comedian, Jarlath O'Regan who has a very successful podcast called "Irish Man Running Abroad with Sonia O'Sullivan" also came with a large group of his runners. We could easily spot Jarlath's crew togged out in their new and eye-catching singlets.

The race itself was littered with some very well known top Irish athletes like Jake O'Regan of St. Johns A.C , Michael Bruton of Leevale A.C.,  Alan O'Shea of Bantry A.C. and the list goes on. We also had former Olympians, Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock, Aoife Cooke of Eagle AC and Michelle Finn of Leevale A.C. & Dublin track club all in taking to the line.

We had a great mix of participants as many of the runners were just out for a light run or walk to soak up the incredible start and finish line atmosphere that was created. With hundreds of spectators, red and white Spar branding all over the course and some very upbeat music and commentary by Shane Meyler, a real party atmosphere was created.

Runners were welcomed with a huge wall of noise for the last home stretch to the finish line. This was just the boost that runners needed to get across the line. One of the biggest cheers was for Sonia herself as she crossed the line with a huge smile of delight and maybe glad to finish too.

Both the men's and women's races were close. Jake O'Regan of St. Johns A.C. won the race in a time of 50:47 on a tough hilly course with Mick Clohisey closely behind in 2nd. In 3rd place was Michael Bruton of Leevale A.C.

The women's race was mouthwatering with the prospect of Aoife Cooke of Eagle A.C. and Michelle Finn of Leevale A.C. running head to head. Just like the men's race, we were not disappointed as we witnessed a very tight and close race. Aoife Cooke edged it with that little bit more experience in the longer distances. She finished stronger to win in a time of 54:50. Michelle finished in a time of 55:07 with Jean Lucey finishing in 3rd place.
Well done to all involved for a fantastic event, Ballymore Cobh A.C., local Gardai, the warm hospitality of local hoteliers and business's, Medics, and of course the finish line director Sonia O'Sullivan's Dad John O'Sullivan, who each year ensures that the finish line is the best experience and well organised finish line around.
