Sportsworld Terenure 5 mile 2024

Race Report

The Terenure 5 Mile hosted by Sportsworld RC was a sell out this year with over 1,600 entries and a further 200 for the Juvenile races. The Terenure 5 is one of Dublin's most favoured events on the calendar. Like many other traditional and long standing clubs their race is thriving due to its popularity among locals, other clubs around Dublin and indeed further afield. We had some fine athletes from Celbridge, Kildare, Leevale in Cork, Croghan A.C, from wexford, Glaslough Harriers in Monahan and many more. Dublin clubs supported in great numbers too with DSD A.C, Brothers Pearse, Blackrock A.C, Crusaders A.C and Rathfarnham WSAF from the south side. North Dublin club Raheny Shamrock A.C.  had the 2nd highest attendance
With all of these clubs we had a very competitive race across the age categories. The race also has a very strong tie with the local community attracting large numbers. Terenure 5 has mastered having a race for all. The sunshine contributed to a great atmosphere and a lot of smiling faces.

Dublin clubs are more challenged than rural and country clubs when it comes to hosting races. Road closure costs are high and co-operation from local authorities and Gardai is essential. However, this is very much a local and community strong event, which led to great support from Gardai making the roads a safe palace and contributing to an overall better runner  experience. Also, sponsors' generosity also enables entry fees to be very reasonable to allow the event to take place.

So what about the race itself? We had a tasty top end battle for the men's race. As athletes lined up we got to see who was taking to the line. First we saw Martin Hoare warm up, then Conor Duffy of Glaslough Harriers. This was looking good, but there was more. Peter somba then rolled up to the line along with a very promising talent of James Hyland of Raheny. We had a great race among all of these athletes. They pushed each other all the way throughout the race. Peter Somba of Ratoath A.C. won the race in a time of 24.40. Peter has hit some good form recently and this was a big win.

The mens overall team winners were DSD A.C. and 2nd team prize was awarded to Sportsworld RC. The top 2 mens over 40+ teams were Rathfarnham WSAF and Blackrock A.C.

The Women's race was more straightforward with Grace Lynch of DSD takinng the tittle this yaer in a time of  27:16. Lauren Tinkler of DCH was 2nd and Lisa Madden of the host club Sportsworld was 3rd.

The women's team winners were Sportworld & DSD A.C. were 2nd. The women's 40+ team winners were Raheny Shamrock A.C breaking the south Dublin team dominance. The 2nd placed team to be awarded a prize was Crusaders A.C.

The teams were calculated as follows:

All teams were undeclared meaning that Masters and Seniors could all score in the overall teams. Only the top 2 teams were awarded prizes. No athlete could score if in the top 2 placed teams for both Overall Teams and Masters over 40 teams. (cannot be part of 2 wining teams). After the top 2 teams you may see some masters scoring in both Overall teams and Masters 40+ Teams. This was allowed as they are not part of prize awards.

Well done to Sportsworld RC of Emily Dowling, Michael Cunnimhgam and many more club members who cracked another great event.
