RACE REPORT
The inaugural Termonfeckin Half Marathon hosted by St. Fechins GAA was a mega hit with runners and for the club itself. They certainly hit the ground running for their first event. Every box was ticked as far as all participants were concerned. The state of the art facilities, huge volunteer presence all over the course, the large number of gardai, commentary and after food spread gave participants a morning to remember.
With the potential of very high temperatures extra water stations were place all over the course giving runners great comfort and knowing that they were well looked after. The water stations were also great locations for onlookers and volunteers to give runners support.
Runners were also spoiled with stunning coastal views as some long flat straights gave them something tak their mind off the hot conditions. The course had some very flat sections with some drags at mile 6.5 to 8 with 2 very nice downhill sections. It was made up of one large loop with a smaller inner loop making it very safe and accessible for onlookers, volunteers and first to reach any part of the course quickly. The course did give runners a nice surprise with a 400m hill as they turned off the main loop of the course to head for home.
The race itself went as predicted as the top 2 athletes took off and for large parts going toe to toe with each other. Drogheda & District's Paul Smith and LSA's Anthony Sharkey gave us some suspense and excitement as to who would win. With about 3 mile to go Paul pulled away and had a comfortable win. Paul recorded a time of 76:41. In 3rd place was Kevin Donnelly of Mallusk Harriers.
The women's race was won by Ann O'Brien of Balbriggan & District AC in a time of 93:31. Sonia Ena Tobin was 2nd with a great run and followed by Anne O'Rourke of Aces. Clubs from all parts of the country. Dublin, Meath, Louth, Monaghan, Armagh, Antrim, Down, Glaway and even overseas all the way from the US took part.
Well done all participants and St. Fechins GAA for a very enjoyable event.
