Athletics Wicklow 5k Road Championship Sponsored By JOMA
It was great to see all the hard work and efforts that were put in place by Wicklow County Board pay off this evening. What a great feeling experienced by athletes as they took their places to fight it out for county medals. Clubs from all over the county of Wicklow were able to compete with great joy and complete safety with the high level of orgainsation that was put in place by Wicklow Athletics County Board.
Just under 100 runners took off in Colour paced zones at 7.15pm. This was an out and back course with the race start and finish line located near Jack Whites pub just off the N11. The facilities were ideal to host such an event in the current Covid climate. Runners had ample space to warm up and a long stretch of road to keep moving when finished to get back to their cars.
The race itself was hotly contested. The men's race we witnessed a 4 horse race to the line. Derek Crammond of Parnell AC eventually pulled away on the home stretch. Brian Geraghty of Greystones AC was 2nd and Jason O'Byrne of Parnell AC was 3rd.
The top 3 women were all from Parnell AC with Sheila O'Byrne taking the title in17:37, Lynne Duffy took 2nd position while Catheine O'Connof came home in 3rd.
Well done to all who participated tonight.
Next up for Athletics Wicklow is their 5k race series in Avondale. These are a series of 5k races over 5k weeks from July 16th to Augst 13th. This event is open
