2025 Race Report
The 41st AXA Raheny 5 was another cracking race in the North Dublin village.
We had another bumper sell out event with 5,000 entries. Despite the wet, cold and windy conditions a large number took to the line of just under 3,800 runners.
We have had some very stormy and unsettled conditions forecasted for the race which, led to a change of route just 24 hours before the race. The race route normally ran through St. Anne's Park, however, with the forecasted strong winds it was deemed to be too risky for participants with possible falling trees and branches. Huge credit must go to the local Gardai and the host club Raheny Shamrock A.C. for making an alternative safe route that took runners up the coast instead of the Park. The conditions settled with about an hour before the race and we were all set for another rip roaring race. We also had a new start line that seemed to be a big hit with runners. The alternative start line and running up the coast road produced some very positive feedback.
The Raheny 5 is very much a community race that also appeals to many runners all around the country. We had runners from Belfast, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Laois, Down Offaly, kilkenny and more. We also had the kids races before that is very much part of the atmosphere and what the event is all about.
The race itself was won by Efrem Gidey of Clonliffe Harriers. Efrem tore the field apart with a mesmerising solo performance. He ran 22:47 on a wet cold day that even made it even more impressive. In 2nd place was Killian Mooney of DSD A.C. and in 3rd was Colm Rooney of Clonliffe Harriers. We had a very good field of runners with 28 athletes under 26 mins. Clonliffe Harriers won the men's senior team with Raheny Shamrock A.C. in 2nd and DCH 3rd. The mens over 40 team winners were Raheny Shamrock A.C, Clonliffe Harriers 2nd and DSD in 3rd.
The women's race was a lot closer. Hannah Gilliland of Annadale Striders won in a time of 26:34. In 2nd place was Ide Nic Dhomhnaill of West Limerick A.C and Dublin Track club. In 3rd place was Jessica Craig of North Down A.C. The womens team winners were DCH and Raheny Shamrock A.C in 2nd. 3rd place was DSD A.C.. The womens over 40 team winners were Raheny Shamrock A.C.. In 2nd place was Portmarnock A.C. and Lusk A.C were 3rd.
Again a massive well done to Raheny Shamrock A.C and their race crew along with Race Director Dave Hooper and the local gardai.
